While you may not want to walk into an otherwise busy and bustling restaurant or store and plop down a box of cash on the table and think that you are going to get what you want, you may have some luck in turning your own fortunes around by some smart investment and some extra money into a business opportunity for yourself and your family. If you are able to think quickly on your feet and are able to devote some time towards it you may even find some business opportunities for sale which make sense AND dollars!
Get Familiar: One of the first things you need to do, once you have decided that pursuing a business is a strategy you would like to explore is to get yourself familiar with the turf. You would not just walk into a game and expect to win without knowing what the game is or what the rules are; by the same rationale you want to be sure that you are familiar with the terminology in the business world before you go diving into any random business opportunities for sale.
Know Your Self: Once you have picked up some of the local trades, looked at the business cycles in your own area, decided what is in abundant supply and what is in shortage, then you can go to the next spot and decide what it is that you would like to go into business with. What you are interested in selling might not be applicable for your locale. For example, you could live in the middle of Kansas; thousands of miles in any direction from the nearest ocean and you could have this burning desire to sell surf boards. No real reason, it could just be something that's eating away at you. Undoubtedly though, if you would look at the current local trends on surf gear taken against the same for places like Big Sur, Montauk, South Beach or the Hawaiian islands, you may be disappointed. However that does not mean that you can not open your surf shop anyway; it just means you need to do one of two things a) re-target your audience or b) move!
If you are able to relocate to your favorite ocean spot then that would be ideal; especially if you have something that all of these surfers need to see. However if this is not the case and you are tied to the farm, you can do yourself a big favor by marketing your merchandise to a different client base. Get some of your boards ridden by your surfer friends, get the board reviewed in the trades, and make sure that you are doing the advertising you need to be doing on the right websites. All of this can help make sure that your product is seen and appreciated by the right clients at the right time. If you can do that then you can sell just about anything to anyone you'd like!
